Funny Little Shows vs WordPress, Wix and Squarespace

An event website from the start, compared with a general-purpose website builder.

The short answer

WordPress, Wix and Squarespace are general-purpose website builders. They can make almost any kind of website, but event listing websites are dynamic and data driven. Funny Little Shows is a website for listing and selling tickets to shows from the start. Your shows listings, artist pages and ticketing all come from the same details, so the website keeps itself up to date. You don't have to try and bend the website platform to your will.

  • Choose a website builder if your shows are a small part of a bigger website, you want to design and edit every part of it yourself, or you need a blog, an online shop or a members’ area.
  • Choose Funny Little Shows if your website is mainly there to list your shows and sell tickets, and you’d rather spend your time on the gigs than on the website.

Built around your gig listings from day one

With a general website builder, the first job is finding a theme or template that suits events, then bending it to fit how you run shows: a line-up page, a page per act, dates and times, sold-out notices, a buy button that goes to the right session. Those specific tweaks are often where things get hard, because the template wasn’t designed for them.

Funny Little Shows starts with an event layout. Your home page lists upcoming shows, each artist gets a page with their sessions, and every session links straight to its tickets. You can control the order shows appear on the home page. We have multiple layouts to choose from - the needs of a festival are different to a venue, which are different to a touring promoter. Either way, we give you the structure.

Our content management features already include Artists, Sessions, Rooms, Partners, Menus and Custom Pages.

Your branding, without the theme hunting

On a website builder you pick a theme, then apply your logo, colours and fonts and hope it all holds together on a phone. When you start with Funny Little Shows, we set up your website on one of our standard layouts with your branding applied: colour scheme, logo and fonts. If you need something more complex, we’ll tell you about any costs before we start.

The trade-off is control. You don’t drag and drop the design yourself. You manage the content, and if you want to change the design, you ask us.

No more copying and pasting

Keeping an events website fresh usually means copying details from a spreadsheet, a document or an email into the website, then into the ticketing platform, then into the newsletter. Every copy is a chance for the website to say 8pm while the tickets say 7.30pm. Or the artist's name is spelt wrong. Or the venue room is incorrect.

In Funny Little Shows you enter the artist description, and create their sessions once. The website, ticketing, door app and marketing emails all use the same details. Change a time or a price and it changes everywhere the next time you publish. Ticket pricing templates and default settings for each room mean even the first entry takes less typing. If you're creating multiple artists (e.g. a festival), we even let you drag and drop folders of artwork images and we match them up for you.

A website that tidies up after itself

On a general website, previous shows stays on the home page until someone remembers to take it down. Funny Little Shows can publish automatically overnight: past sessions come off, and artists with no more upcoming shows are archived. You can also schedule a publish for a future time, such as the moment a line-up is announced.

No platform updates to manage

With self-hosted WordPress, you or your developer keep WordPress, the theme and every plugin up to date, and sometimes an update breaks something. Wix and Squarespace look after their own platforms, but you still look after the ticketing integration, and the website and ticketing have to keep working together.

Funny Little Shows is hosted and maintained by us, including the SSL/HTTPS certificate. The website and ticketing are one system, so there’s no integration to keep alive.

All three website builders offer events features: Wix has Wix Events, which includes ticket sales, Squarespace has an events page, and WordPress has events plugins. How much of the table applies depends on the platform and plugins you choose. Checked 9 October 2026.

What you can still change yourself

  • Your own pages, such as About Us, a venue guide, terms and conditions or a privacy policy.
  • Images, like your logo, background image and of course all the artist images.
  • Menus across the top and in the footer, including links to your socials.
  • News headlines on the home page that appear and disappear on the dates you set (on festival websites).
  • Search engine details, such as your website title and description.
  • Previews and scheduling. Review changes with your team, then publish now or at a set time.

See the website documentation for details.

When a website builder is the better choice

  • Shows are only part of what you do. If the website is mostly about something else, such as a restaurant, a band or a business, a general website builder fits better.
  • You want to design it yourself. Website builders give you full, hands-on control of the layout. With us, design changes go through us.
  • You need a blog, an online shop or a members’ area. We do custom pages and news headlines, not a full blog or shop.
  • You run one or two events a year. A simple page with a link to a ticketing platform may be all you need.

Keeping your current website

You don’t have to move your website to use Funny Little Shows. You can keep your WordPress, Wix or Squarespace site and use Funny Little Shows for ticketing only, linking each show on your website to its ticket page.

You still get the checkout, comps, the door app, sales reporting and email marketing. What you lose is the connection between your website and your shows. You add each show to your website yourself, keep its details in step with the ticketing, and take it down once it’s over. That’s the copying and pasting this page is about, so most promoters who list shows regularly get more from the full website.

Pricing

A hosted Funny Little Shows website is $35 a month, including hosting and the SSL/HTTPS certificate. You supply the domain name - we'll help you point it at our platform. Ticketing is 2.5% of ticket sales (including card fees), plus $1 per ticket paid by the punter, with or without the website. See pricing.

Frequently asked questions

You can change the content yourself: your shows, artist pages, custom pages, menus and headlines. The design is set up for you when you start, on one of our standard layouts with your colours, logo and fonts. If you want to change the design later, contact us. If you want to edit every part of the design yourself, a general website builder such as WordPress, Wix or Squarespace gives you more control.

Yes. Link each show on your website to its Funny Little Shows ticket page, and you still get the checkout, comps, the door app, sales reporting and email marketing. The trade-off is that your website no longer updates itself: you add each show, keep its details matching the ticketing, and remove it once it’s over.

Yes. You keep your domain name. When you start with Funny Little Shows, we send you the settings to point your domain at your new website and help you with the change. Pages such as About Us can be recreated as custom pages.

No. Funny Little Shows is hosted and maintained for you, including the SSL/HTTPS certificate. There are no themes, plugins or platform updates to manage, and the website and ticketing are the same system, so there’s no integration to keep working.

Your gig listings are built from the artists, shows and sessions you set up for ticketing, so you only enter the details once. Publish when you’re ready, or schedule it. With automatic publishing turned on, past shows come off your website overnight.

Yes. Add your own pages, such as About Us, FAQs, a venue guide or terms and conditions, and link them from your menus. Funny Little Shows doesn’t include a full blog or an online shop. If you need those, a general website builder is a better fit.
